Journal Usage Statistics Project

Upload all journals and any items that have been used by patrons but were not returned through the library computer system. (i.e. when books/journals are left on study tables)

Scanning and Uploading Procedures: Handheld Scanner Operating Instructions

  1. Turn on the unit with the red power button.

  2. The unit will power up directly to the barcode scanning mode. The screen should say ‘Scan next barcode.’ If this message does not appear, turn the unit off and on. Call ITD (5-9188) if it still does not work.

  3. Scan items by pressing the yellow button. Hold the yellow button down until a ‘beep’ is heard, indicating that a barcode has been scanned. The scanner will then display the number of barcodes scanned thus far. Barcodes are automatically saved in the system in case it powers down abruptly.

  4. To upload the barcodes, go to the desktop and click on ‘Barcode Uploade.’ The system will run by itself, and you only have to click ‘OK’ at the end to close the program.

  5. As barcodes are scanned, they are saved in a file named ‘Barcodes.txt.’ This file gets transferred in the uploading process. You may on occasion see an error message : ‘Barcode.txt not found.’ This message is normal. Exit the Barcode Uploader computer program and reopen it.
