Weather Emergency Procedures

If you are scheduled to open the Library on a morning of bad weather, always verify the status  of the campus before coming to work.

If the Campus is CLOSED due to inclement weather, the library is also CLOSED.

If the Campus opening is DELAYED, the library opens when the Campus opens, NOT before.

If you are unsure of library hours, check the Campus website, call 301-405-1000  or 301-405-SNOW (7669), or check local TV/radio stations beginning at 6:00 am to find out if UMCP is closed or delayed. You may also check President Loh’s official twitter, which usually provides information between 5-6 am. If no information is given, staff should assume the Campus is open on time.

If closing is declared AFTER library facilities have opened:

Student Assistant on duty should call staff who are schedules for later shifts to tell them not to come to work, and post a note on the front door indicating that the University has declared a weather emergency closing noting the time and date.

Information about the closing of UMD Libraries comes from the Dean of Libraries via the supervisory email chain. A Student Assistant should NEVER close the Library without receiving word from a supervisor or from the Library Administration (Dean’s Office, Associate Director of Public Services, or Head of Branch Libraries).

If the weather is bad or an emergency closing question arises in the EVENING or on WEEKENDS, call Mckeldin Library Circulation Supervisor on duty at (301)405-9046.
